Writing Core Curriculum – Creative Storytelling & Skills (Grades 1–7)

February 24, 2026 By Lori King

Featured Educator: Nicole Anderson

We’re excited to spotlight Writing Core Curriculum: Creative Storytelling & Skills, a thoughtfully designed 22-week writing program that blends core ELA skills with imagination-driven storytelling. Offered in two sessions per year and tailored for Grades 1–2, 3–4, and 5–7, this course helps students build plots, characters, and confidence—all in a calm, inclusive environment.

About the Class

Writing Core Curriculum: Creative Storytelling & Skills is more than a writing class—it’s a supportive creative studio where students learn how to turn the “movies in their heads” into clear, confident writing.

Students will:

  • Build strong plots and characters through engaging prompts
  • Strengthen core ELA skills alongside creative expression
  • Share work with peers in a positive, guided feedback setting
  • Grow confidence through consistent practice and encouragement

Format: Multi-week (22 weeks)
Sessions: Two per year
Grades: 1–2 | 3–4 | 5–7
Learning Needs Supported: ADHD, Anxiety

Clear expectations, simple instructions, and positive reinforcement are central to every class—making this a welcoming space for learners with different comfort levels and learning styles.

Meet the Educator

Hello! I’m Nicole Anderson, and I believe every student has a world inside them—just waiting for the right spark.

With an MFA in Media Design and a B.S. in Web & Multimedia Design, I see stories as immersive worlds, not just words on a page. I help young writers bridge the gap between their big ideas and the technical skills needed to express them clearly. Whether a student is building a fantasy realm, shaping a complex hero, or finding their voice for the first time, my classroom is a supportive, high-energy space where creativity thrives.

A History of Results

My teaching style is rooted in hands-on experience and a deep commitment to student growth.

  • The Writer’s Den: I’ve led creative spaces where middle schoolers strengthened storytelling and critical thinking.
  • Building Foundations: I’ve helped students move from struggling readers and writers to performing well above grade level.
  • The Homeschool Edge: As a homeschooling parent who guided my own children to graduate early, I meet each learner exactly where they are.

Teaching Philosophy: Confidence Through Design

Writing is the closest thing we have to real magic. Because of my design background, I teach students to see their stories—starting with a sketch, building a strong frame, and then adding color and detail. My classroom is a perfection-free zone where mistakes are celebrated as part of the creative process. This approach helps even reluctant writers transform “I can’t” into “Look what I built.”

Inclusivity & Learning Support

I’m committed to creating a calm, inclusive environment where every learner feels safe and respected. I specialize in supporting students who experience writing anxiety or focus challenges, including those with ADHD. Through differentiated instruction, I adapt lessons to fit each child’s unique brain—ensuring every voice is heard and valued.

What to Expect in Class

  • World-Building & Discovery: Mapping imaginative spaces that spark ideas
  • Character Blueprinting: Giving fictional people a heart, voice, and motivation
  • Positive Peer Feedback: A supportive “Writer’s Den” community
  • Visual Storytelling: Cinematic techniques that make stories feel real

The Goal

Every student leaves with stronger writing habits—and the confidence to say:

“I am a writer.”

We can’t wait to see what your learner creates in Writing Core Curriculum: Creative Storytelling & Skills.
